How AI is Shaping the Future of Work

.

Jarvis. R2D2. The Matrix. Self-sufficient robots, or rather artificial intelligences, have been part of our culture for dozens of years now. From TV shows to books to video games, the rise of an AI has been anticipated for dozens of years now.

Many people look forward to a time when an artificial intelligence will be able to do our manual tasks and mundane chores, a robot that will do our laundry or be our personal secretary for bills, payments, in essence give us better advice than we could find ourselves and more free time to relax.

However, others are worried that a new age of robots will be taking over our jobs and leaving many unemployed. Routine jobs that require repetitive or simple manual tasks are ones that people fear will suffer the most.

Research, however, has shown that although the advent of AI may displace some jobs, it will create new ones as well. In fact, in the three industrial revolutions that have passed in history, more jobs have been created than they have been displaced. In this fourth revolution currently going on, researchers predict that although about seventy five million jobs will be displaced, over a hundred million jobs will be created.

This means that if we can just learn to adapt our own skills to this new technological advancement and learn some new ones that will enhance our ability to work alongside an AI, there will be even more opportunities to grow and thrive.

As of right now, it is not predicted that an artificial intelligence will be taking away entire job sectors. According to research, less than 5% of jobs can be entirely moved to an automated system that uses artificial intelligence.

As for the rest of the jobs, about 50% will be able to move about 30% of their tasks to AI. Instead of switching those jobs completely to AI, companies instead may be asking employees to start working alongside their AI coworkers. In addition to humans, computers may become an integral part of teams, taking on simpler, time consuming tasks that will enable their human counterparts to complete more meaningful tasks much faster.

As artificial intelligences fill in the roles of running routine analytics or other simple tasks, this will allow employees to be able to focus on more creative work.

For example, while a tech person creates an outline for a software, a computer may be able to code the entire software and drastically reduce the time that it takes to complete such a task. Companies will be able to spend more time brainstorming new ideas and designing products rather than spending the grunt work creating those products.

Another common example of a job sector that could benefit from this creativity is sales marketing. A salesperson who has to spend less time doing research on a potential buyer can use that extra time building relationships with their customers and closing more deals. Although the human aspect of sales will remain, a computer will be able to provide all the relevant information to make the process smoother and easier.

In addition to boosting creativity, an artificial intelligence will also be able to improve the quality of jobs and the resulting customer experiences that they can provide. By analyzing customers' backgrounds, conversations, and previously successful or unsuccessful businesses, an AI will be able to direct an employee towards the best course of action for a business call or sales pitch. This will both improve the customer experience and maximize the efficiency of the employee to complete as many sales as smoothly as possible.

Whether you believe that robots will take over the world in the future, or whether you anticipate a time during which they will be able to do all your work for free, there is little debate over the fact that it will one day be an integral part of our future. From more time devoted to creative thinking processes and higher quality of work and customer experience, most people will be affected in some way or other.

But back to the relevance of artificial intelligence in the job industry. As of right now, some of the things that you can do to prepare for the coming change in work trends are the following:

Stay up to date with artificial intelligence

If the field you are in encourages a role for artificial intelligence, keep up to date on how it’s changing. You never know - an artificial intelligence may be your new coworker one day. Keeping up with ways to integrate or learn new skills that will enable you to work with an AI can both increase your marketability as well as smoothen the transition into a different work environment. Using different online resources such as ANT, you can attend different courses and subsequently find projects that will enable you to find experience in the field.

Focus on the human element

Although AI may take routine tasks in the workforce, it has not yet been shown to develop creative thinking. For this reason, potential employers even after an integration of AI will still be looking for employees that are able to work creatively alongside an AI. Although some parts of the job may become obsolete, keep up to date with the newest innovations and developments in your field to practice your creativity and give you more ideas.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Artificial intelligences may become your new secretary, maid, or customer service representative. They can cut down on manual or simple work and increase a company’s quality and speed of services. However, they will also change the job market in a way that might require a different approach to master.

This new change could be challenging and encourage a shift towards a different kind of work environment and skills, and one way to make this change smoother is by joining ANT, a comprehensive platform where you can both learn and gain experience in various fields. It consists of three spheres that aim to maximize user experience and job marketability.

The first sphere, the learning path is an area where courses can be taken to gain or refresh skills that will be valuable in the upcoming job market. Second, the project matchmaker will be able to connect members to short term projects and internships that will allow them to gain experience and build their resume in their respective fields. Finally, the digital portfolio is a place where users can display their experience and skills to potential employers.

With rapidly changing technology that is constantly changing the job market, focusing on the human element in jobs and finding ways to adjust to this new work environment can encourage a smoother transition and even success in the new age of artificial intelligence.
